I would like to acknowledge the Kaurna people of the Adelaide Plains, the Traditional Custodians of the land on which I was born and where most of the work on my website was made. The Kaurna people have been making art and telling stories in this place for tens of thousands of years, and continue to do so. I pay my respects to Elders — past, present and emerging, and acknowledge that these lands and waters are of enduring importance to the Kaurna people today. Their sovereignty was never ceded.

I also acknowledge the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation, the Traditional Custodians of Naarm (Melbourne). I pay my respects to Elders past, present and emerging. Their sovereignty was also never ceded.

B. 1994

In my art practice I am focused on creating constructions and performances specifically for the camera. During my BA in Visual Art & Design from 2012 - 2015, I was mostly interested in concepts of the photograph as object. Around this time I was influenced by the research and work of artists such as Lucas Blalock, Anouk Kruithof and Daniel Gordon, because their work demonstrated to me the photograph’s potential for continued involvement in physical and bodily life after its initial creation. This evolved gradually into an interest in the photograph as costume and set - an evolution that was heavily influenced by my involvement in The Bait Fridge (a performance art collective comprising of several South Australian artists including Henry Jock Walker, Kaspar Schmidt Mumm, Adrian Schmidt Mumm, Arlon Hall, Dave Court, Haris Koutlakis and many more), and also the work of Hito Steyerl, John Divola, and then one of my past teachers Josef Felber introducing me to the 1987 work of Fischli + Weiss which brought objects to life through staged video. More recently I have experimented with moving image. Broadly, I am motivated to explore ideas of performance, costume, construction and object through a photographic perspective. In doing this I find connections between memory and the strange ways we stage and capture it - from memories of past relationships to the way we remember prehistoric creatures.

(I also maintain a commercial photography practice where I focus on still life photography. Feel free to send me an email or a text message if you would like to work together I am always interested to collaborate.)

Emmaline’s photographic work has been exhibited around Australia in galleries including the Perth Institute of Contemporary Art (WA), Stills Gallery (NSW), Bus Projects (VIC), Hugo Michel Gallery (SA), and GAGProjects/Greenaway Gallery (SA). A selection of her work has been acquired by Artbank Australia and she has been featured in the British Journal of Photography. Currently she is studying a Master of Photography at Photography Studies College.
